The Massive Illusion Hidden in Our Everyday Blue

We live our lives immersed in a veritable flood of blue. Whenever we lift our heads, the expansive azure sky greets us, and the oceans we visit during our summer getaways sparkle in deep cobalt. If you peer into an aquarium or a well-maintained planted tank, you will find tropical fish like the neon tetra gliding gracefully through the green foliage, radiating a brilliant fluorescent blue. Even the shirt you are wearing right now or the smartphone case resting beside you might very well be blue. Because we are surrounded by such an abundance of this color, we unconsciously move through life under the illusion that blue is one of the most common and ordinary colors in the natural world.

However, if we look just a little deeper into the realms of natural science, the history of human art, and the origins of language, this common-sense assumption is mercilessly shattered. Astonishingly, on this planet, ‘blue’ has historically been the most difficult to obtain, the rarest, and in some cases, a mirage-like color that does not even biologically exist. Recently, upon discovering the true identity of blue hidden within biology and history, I was profoundly struck by the marvelous secrets harbored by this hue we so casually encounter every day. Today, I would like to delve into the secret twists of blue—from nature’s meticulous optical engineering and the bankruptcy of master painters to the curious origins of human melancholy.

1. Nature’s Elaborate Trick: The Nonexistence of Blue Pigment

The first revelation that catches us off guard is the fact that, in the animal kingdom, true ‘blue pigment’ is practically nonexistent. If you have ever kept an aquarium, you have likely been captivated by the dazzling blue of tropical fish piercing through the dense green aquatic plants. The vivid blue that colors the wings of the Morpho butterfly fluttering through Central American rainforests, or the luminous stripes of the neon tetra in a fish tank, is not a chemical pigment at all. Shockingly, it is a thorough ‘optical illusion’ crafted by light.

On the surface of the scales or feathers of these creatures lie microscopic, nano-scale crystalline plates called ‘guanine,’ stacked meticulously like layers of roof tiles. When white light hits this surface, longer wavelengths like red or yellow are either absorbed or pass right through. However, the shorter blue wavelengths cause complex refraction and interference within these microscopic gaps, bouncing back with intense vibrancy. We call this phenomenon ‘structural color.’ In other words, these tiny creatures are not painted with blue ink; rather, they are the master magicians of nano-engineering, adorned with microscopic mirrors that manipulate light itself.

This is precisely why, when you turn off the aquarium lights or when these fish reach the end of their lives, that once-glorious blue instantly fades into a dull, lifeless gray as the driving force to reflect light disappears. Because true blue pigment was so extraordinarily difficult to synthesize in nature, living organisms chose a brilliant evolutionary detour: instead of creating the color themselves, they learned to steal and reflect the light.

2. The Color More Precious Than Gold That Bankrupted Master Painters

Since blue was so vanishingly rare in nature, humanity’s struggle to reproduce it on canvas was inevitably a desperate and grueling endeavor. From the Renaissance through the 18th century, blue was not merely a painting material; it was a luxury item that symbolized ultimate wealth and power. The most perfect blue that painters fervently desired was ‘Ultramarine.’ The very name, meaning ‘the color from beyond (ultra) the sea (marine),’ hints at how incredibly difficult it was to procure.

At the time, the only way to obtain this pigment was to import ‘Lapis Lazuli,’ a rare gemstone mined exclusively from the rugged, treacherous mountains of Afghanistan, and grind it into a fine powder. Because the refinement process was painstakingly slow and the raw gemstone itself was so scarce, Ultramarine was traded at a significantly higher price than its weight in pure gold. Consequently, this blue could not be used carelessly. It was strictly reserved for the most sacred elements of a painting, such as the flowing robes of the Virgin Mary, or for the portraits of the highest-ranking monarchs who could afford the astronomical cost.

The artistic obsession with this blue pigment even led to personal tragedies. The great Dutch master Johannes Vermeer, famous for ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring,’ used the exorbitantly expensive Ultramarine so lavishly to paint the girl’s iconic blue turban that he spent his entire life drowning in severe debt. It is a poignant testament to the fanatic desire of artists who sought to possess, by human hands, a color that nature itself had refused to surrender easily.

3. Maritime Grief and Blue Devils: How ‘Blue’ Became the Symbol of Melancholy

If blue was visually considered so beautiful and noble, how did it devolve into a word representing sadness or ‘feeling blue’ in the English-speaking world? This linguistic shift is curiously intertwined with the grueling realities of human life and old superstitions.

The most widely accepted origin traces back to the mourning customs of sailors during the Age of Discovery. When a vital figure of a ship, such as the captain or the navigator, died during a perilous, months-long voyage, the crew would express their deep mourning by hoisting a ‘Blue Flag’ or painting a blue band along the ship’s hull as they returned to their home port. A sailing ship with a blue band, gliding in heavy silence over a cold sea beneath ash-gray clouds, was the very visual embodiment of the profound loss and grief felt by those left behind.

Another fascinating origin stems from a myth prevalent around the 17th century. At the time, people believed that when a person suffered from severe hangovers, intense sorrow, or hallucinations, tiny demons emitting blue smoke—known as ‘Blue Devils’—would hover around them, gnawing at their sanity. The name of these demons, which chilled the human soul and forced it into a state of lethargy, was later shortened and became the etymological root of ‘Blues,’ a musical genre born from the exhausting and sorrowful lives of African Americans. Humanity intuitively understood that the inherent coldness and introspective stillness of blue, when pushed to its extreme, ultimately touches the depths of profound loneliness and depression.

4. Reclaiming the Marvel of Blue in an Era of Abundance

Today, thanks to the advancements in modern chemistry that allow for the mass production of synthetic pigments, and the invention of the blue LED—which won the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics—blue has become a color that anyone can easily and cheaply acquire. Painters no longer need to go into debt to use blue, and with the simple press of a button, our monitors and lights emit tens of thousands of different blue hues.

Yet, our resolution of the world changes completely when we realize that this now-commonplace blue was once a crystallized labor of patience, ground from gems more precious than gold. When we understand that the glowing scales of a fish are not mere pigments, but nature’s intricate mirror structures mathematically calculating the wavelengths of light, our perspective broadens.

We live in an era where everything is provided too easily and too quickly. However, behind the ordinary things we wear, see, and consume every day lie layers of nature’s fierce survival strategies spanning tens of thousands of years, as well as humanity’s relentless desires. Tonight, when you turn on your aquarium light to watch a blue fish, or when you drag your exhausted body home and look up at the deep azure of the night sky, why not take a moment to reflect on the distant history and the magic of light contained within that color? Just that brief moment of contemplation will make our everyday lives infinitely more dazzling and profoundly rich.
