[Astrology Part 2] Why Astrology is More Obsessive Than Saju (And Why We Decided to Hide the Clock)

To be completely honest, when most people hear the words ‘astrology’ or ‘horoscope,’ they inevitably picture that trivial section tucked away at the back of a lifestyle magazine or a superficial daily fortune popping up on a morning website. It is the kind of utterly predictable, nutritionally devoid nonsense that makes you yawn just hearing it, such as, “Aquarius, your financial luck is excellent this week, so head east!” I, too, must confess that I once dismissed astrology as nothing more than a frivolous pastime or an outdated personality quiz that flickered out of style long before the MBTI craze took over.

However, if you dig just a little deeper into this field with even a fraction of seriousness, you will immediately realize that this is no mere parlor trick. While the East possesses the magnificent, statistically-based system of Saju (Four Pillars of Destiny), the West has astrology; and when comparing the specifications of these two, astrology actually boasts a level of detail that is far more obsessive and borders on the neurotic. You might feel a sharp sting of realization when you discover just how terrifyingly precise of a psychological matrix the ancients constructed under the guise of the zodiac to dissect human temperament and the unconscious.

1. The Star Sign We Know is Merely a Speck of Dust in the Solar System

When we casually mention at a bar or a social gathering, “I am a Leo,” or “I am a Scorpio,” that specific sign represents only one single variable: the ‘Sun Sign,’ which indicates the position the Sun occupied during our birth month. However, if you open a genuine, original Natal Chart, the Sun is merely one of countless variables.

The true fascination lies in the placement of the other planets, which symbolize the multiple personalities hidden within us. If the Sun represents our outward social ego and the overall directional compass of our life, the ‘Moon’ holds the reins to the instinctual emotions and defense mechanisms that abruptly surface when we are lying alone in bed or pushed to our absolute stress limits. The carefully tailored business suit we wear for the world to see—the first impression and persona others feel when they meet us—is strictly determined by the ‘Ascendant’ (Rising Sign).

But it does not stop there. The cognitive circuitry activated when engaging in fierce internet debates or deploying logic in a boardroom is governed by ‘Mercury’. The specific type of romantic partner we are drawn to and the kind of art we are willing to spend money on are under the jurisdiction of ‘Venus’. Furthermore, the exact manner in which we express our rage when we are absolutely furious is dictated by ‘Mars’. Ultimately, judging a human being based on a single Sun sign is identical to the delusion of thinking you completely understand a laptop’s CPU performance and RAM capacity simply by glancing at the color of its outer chassis. A human being is not an entity that can be flattened and summarized so simplistically.

2. A Phenomenal Data Obsession That Easily Surpasses Saju

Eastern Saju unravels a person’s fate and temperament by erecting four pillars representing the year, month, day, and time of birth, comprising eight characters. Here, the final pillar—the time of birth—is typically divided into two-hour intervals. While this alone seems like a highly precise classification method, discussing data resolution in front of Western astrology can feel slightly embarrassing.

Astrology obsessively demands the exact ‘minute’ of your birth, along with the very ‘latitude and longitude’ (GPS coordinates) of the hospital delivery room where you let out your first cry. Why is such painstakingly strict data required? It is because as the Earth rotates, the celestial degrees shift minutely by one degree approximately every four minutes. Based on this mere four-minute difference, the boundary lines of the ‘Houses’—which slice the stage of your life into 12 distinct sectors—can be completely overturned. This means that whether a certain planet falls into your 2nd House of wealth and capability or your 4th House of family and roots is decided by a margin of just a few minutes. Furthermore, it interprets that internal conflicts or talents change moment by moment depending on the specific angles the planets form with one another.

The ancient astronomers and mathematicians of the past were essentially severe data obsessives who placed human life onto massive geometric coordinates, refusing to allow even a few minutes of error.

3. So Why Did We Cover Up That Precise ‘Time of Birth’?

Now, if you have read this far, a perfectly reasonable question will naturally arise in your mind. “If it is such a fearsome system that calculates down to the minute, why on earth are we having this conversation with the clock covered up?”

The reason is incredibly simple and realistic. The vast majority of modern people do not accurately remember the exact time they were born. Unfortunately, even if you call your mother and beg for the answer, the response is often nothing more than a vague memory along the lines of, “Well, I think it was right around the time the morning talk show ended and I was running the vacuum?” In most cases, that old maternity notebook was thrown out during a move ages ago, and the maternity ward where you were born went out of business and was converted into a local fast-food franchise over a decade ago.

No matter how brilliant and precise a psychological analysis tool may be, if it stresses you out from the very beginning by demanding, “Go find out exactly what hour and minute you were born,” it becomes a rather unkind approach both commercially and experientially. Forcing unnecessary, futile efforts and friction is merely ancient perfectionism; what modern individuals truly need is a more intuitive and crystal-clear core. Therefore, we decisively choose to discard the arrogance that insists on checking the clock first.

4. Even Without the Time, Over 80% of the Inner Framework Survives

You might worry that removing the exact time will cause the intricate details of astrology to collapse completely. However, that thought is only half right and half wrong. It is true that the 12 House system mentioned earlier, or the Ascendant that determines your first impression, cannot be accurately extracted without that minute-by-minute timeline. Nevertheless, data analysis is always governed by the ‘Pareto Principle’ (the 80/20 rule).

Even if we boldly omit the 20% bottleneck data of the birth time, we can still calculate over 80% of the structural framework your major planets—the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn—form within your unconscious mind, completely error-free, using only your birth date and approximate location. This is because, with the exception of the Moon, most planets do not move across zodiac signs to any meaningful degree within the span of a day or two.

The purpose of looking into the ancient tool of astrology is not to play the role of a third-rate fortune teller guessing whether you will lose money in the stock market tomorrow afternoon. Based on Carl Jung’s analytical psychology, the true objective is to map out the ‘massive skeleton’ of which complexes and temperaments are coiled deep within your unconsciousness. And to grasp this bold, overarching map of the unconscious, we really do not need vague, minute-level records like “right around when the morning soap opera ended.” Reducing unnecessary friction and efficiently extracting only the true unconscious tendencies of my life. That is the smartest and coolest way to reinterpret this great ancient legacy for the modern era.
